FFA membership on the rise in Iowa

The executive director of the Iowa FFA Association says student membership continues to increase across the state.

“We’re trending toward another membership record this year,” Scott Johnson said.

He says the organization is seeing long-term growth. “We are plus-40% on membership in the last 10 years and plus-25% in the last five.”

Speaking to Brownfield at this week’s Iowa FFA State Convention in Ames, Johnson said he credits the trend to an expansion in area chapters.

“When I started in this position in 2012 we had 215 FFA chapters. We are now at 273 FFA chapters. When you increase the number of programs or presence in schools, you’re going to see more students.”

He says the average number of members per chapter is more than 70.
