Finding a fix for Proposition 12 remains a priority
A recent poll indicates many voters in battleground states want Congress to prevent states like California from setting animal welfare standards that apply beyond its borders.
Andy Curliss, vice president of strategic engagement with the National Pork Producers Council, says it’s impacting grocery costs, and consumers are concerned. “They are experiencing stress from grocery prices, and at the same time, they recognize that there are things that members of Congress can do to provide stability and certainty,” he says.
Change Research surveyed more than 4,200 registered voters in seven states from September 11 to 16, 2024. Seventy-one percent of voters say their grocery costs have been on the rise, and 75 percent of respondents say it has been stressful.
Curliss tells Brownfield that the polling data shows strong support for Congress to take action to protect farmers. “Of those, four out of every five said that they would be more likely to support candidates and lawmakers who act to provide stability for farmers,” he says.
The National Pork Producers Council continues to call for a federal solution to California’s Proposition 12. Earlier this week, the organization launched an ad campaign to bring more attention to the issue.
Curliss says NPPC’s goal is the same today as it has been. “To ensure that there is certainty and stability for all pork producers across the United States,” he says.
The organization says the overregulation increases consumer costs and jeopardizes food security for the entire nation.
