Flood raises alarm over NWS cuts
A US Congressman from Nebraska says federal funding cuts to the National Weather Service puts farmers and ranchers at risk.
“I have made this a top priority. I am spending political capital on it.”
Mike Flood tells Brownfield, “After this whole thing with the weather balloons and what I saw at the Valley Office for the National Weather Service outside of Omaha, I went to the White House and I pulled the fire alarm. I went to OMB. I pulled the fire alarm.”
He says the suspension of weather balloon observations makes it harder for ag producers to plan for weather. “The idea of not putting up weather balloons in the month of April – for God’s sake – We’re in tornado alley and the only window in the country where you don’t see any weather balloons is South Dakota and Nebraska. “
Flood says he’s concerned that without additional resources some NWS offices may close in the region.
