FMMO hearing remains on pause

The USDA’s hearing on the Federal Milk Marketing Orders is in recess.

The hearing had eight weeks of testimony, and there’s more to come after Thanksgiving, provided the government hasn’t shut down due to a lack of funding.

The USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service tells Brownfield the recess was necessary because of various scheduling conflicts and will reconvene on November 27, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at the 502 Event Center, 502 E Carmel Drive, Carmel, Indiana.

Economist Roger Cryan with the American Farm Bureau Federation tells Brownfield there’s another possibility for a recess in December. He says USDA may have to book more time at the hosting venue if the hearing isn’t wrapped up at the end of December 3rd.

Once the hearing resumes, it is expected that testimony will continue into early next year.  Then, USDA will need several months to propose a plan, followed by several months of public comment.  Farm groups including American Farm Bureau Federation say implementation of any new federal order changes isn’t likely until 2025.
