Food Evolution film maker says defending farmers, science ‘an honor’

The maker of the film Food Evolution says the documentary shows how easily misinformation can overwhelm objective analysis.

“The GMO story is really just a metaphor for how important it is to use science to make decisions,” said Scott Hamilton Kennedy, the Academy Award nominated film maker who produced the movie, narrated by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson.  Kennedy told reporters in a conference call the process was gratifying.

“I was very honored that the film could defend scientists and farmers in a way that hadn’t been done in film for a long time,” said Kennedy.  “It’s been a great honor to put those people on film and to see their response to the film.”

Food Evolution, commissioned by the Institute of Food Technologists and promoted by the U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance, is described as an independent investigation into biotechnology.  Kennedy says the film is being disparaged by what he calls fringe activists who oppose GMOs, but Kennedy is confident of its scientific basis.

“We stand by the evidence in the film and the response to the film is validating that,” said Kennedy.

Food Evolution is currently available on the film streaming service Hulu.
