Food grade corn advancements

Food grade corn is providing opportunities for farmers and now farmers can utilize the latest in genetics.

The president & CEO of AgReliant Genetics, Brian Barker, says commodity end users are very selective of the corn that goes into their products.

“They come back and say, ‘Hey, we’re looking for these different nutritional profiles or performance characteristics in terms of how it bakes and how it fries up.’”  He says, “Let’s actually look at the output characteristics of the grain itself.”

Chuck Hill, specialty products manager, tells Brownfield the market for food-grade corn has expanded.

“When I first started doing this 25 years ago there was that connotation, ‘Well, if it’s food grade, it’s not going to yield as well,’ and maybe they didn’t back then but we’ve got that now where they yield every bit as well,” he says.

End users and farmers are learning about the latest in food grade corn genetics today at the 2024 AgriGold Specialty Products Conference near Champaign, IL.
