Formulate a SCN action plan

A BASF representative says now is the time for farmers to formulate a soybean cyst nematode action plan.

Nick Tinsley says a fall soil test is key.

“Knowing the risk that you’re facing is the first step toward having a comprehensive management plan that includes a number of different tactics that can really start to impact your bottom line,” he says.

He tells Brownfield farmers have tools to protect their soybeans, like crop rotations.

“We’re also fortunate that a lot of the varieties we have in our seed catalogs have resistance to soybean cyst nematode.”  He says, “Now, that’s not perfect, but it’s definitely something that should be incorporated into a management plan.”

Tinsley says seed treatments have also proven effective against SCN.

There are seed treatments out there that are going to go a long way toward helping provide some yield benefit in the face of SCN,” he says.

He says the pest causes an estimated billion dollars in damage to U.S. soybeans each year, so farmers should actively manage against the threat.
