Frigid weather making for difficult calving season

Frigid temperatures have made calving season more difficult for a southeast Nebraska farmer.

Logan Bredemeier tells Brownfield cattle have mostly fared well.

“This week has been kind of tough on the calves. We’ve actually lost three or four this week with the cold and how everything has cycled from warm back to cold. It’s pretty hard on the young calves.”

Bredemeier says calving season is more than 50 percent complete, and calf-loss this year has been abnormally high.

“Part of it’s cold. That last cold snap, we lost a few, and we’ve lost some kind of just intermittently along the way, whether they were born dead or we missed the opportunity to pull the calf and save it.”

He says the last time he faced such a difficult calving season was in 2019. Bredemeier raises cattle and grows corn and soybeans near Falls City.
