From dairy farm to food bank

The owner of a southwestern Indiana dairy farm says providing dairy as a protein source in food banks helps address nutrition gaps.
Sam Schoweppe is the director of business partnerships at Fresh Connect Central, operated by Gleaners Food Bank.
“Dairy provides such a unique nutrient package that it solves many of the dietary challenges that people are facing,” she says.
She tells Brownfield milk is one of the most requested items at food banks.
“When you’re trying to move a lot of food in different distribution types, sometimes there’s refrigeration challenges,” she says. “Whether that’s in transportation or storage, or even in people’s homes. Shelf stable milk or shelf stable food, that’s very popular.”
Schoweppe says promoting dairy as a product to help fight food insecurity can play help play a role in meeting the nutritional needs of local communities.
