GDT index jumps almost 5%

The Global Dairy Trade index rose 4.8% in Tuesday’s trading, with prices higher for everything but lactose.

The butter market saw the biggest gain, up 8.3% to $6,990 per metric ton, or $3.17 per pound.

Anhydrous milk fat rose 4.6% to $7,558 per metric ton, or $3.42 per pound.

Whole milk powder prices were up 4.4% to $3,713 a metric ton, or $1.68 per pound.

Skim milk powder was also up 4% at $2,850 per metric ton, or $1.29 per pound.

Butter milk powder rose 2.1% to $3,238 per metric ton, or $1.46 per pound.

Cheddar cheese prices rose 4% to $4,973 per metric ton, or $2.25 per pound.

Mozzarella cheese was up 0.9% to $4,607 per metric ton, or $2.08 per pound.

Lactose prices fell 6.1% to $843 per metric ton, or $0.38 per pound.

Tuesday’s trading event had 23 rounds of bidding with 112 buyers acquiring 36,595 metric tons of dairy products.
