Generic chemicals should bring more scouting trips

The outreach agronomist with the Illinois Soybean Association says farmers that are turning to generic chemicals as a cost-saving measure should plan to increase their scouting trips.

Stephanie Porter tells Brownfield, “A recent study just came out from Iowa State with fungicides.”  She says, “The generics just may not last as long is what they’re finding, so make sure you take that in consideration, especially with tar spot.”

She says lapses in crop protection can be detrimental.

“And you have to keep an eye on it.”  She says, “We don’t have that sense of security anymore. Just because you put a fungicide on doesn’t mean everything’s OK. We still have to be out there anyway to scout.”

Porter says it’s always important to read and follow label directions, but even more so with generic products.

“Follow and read the label directions.”  She says, “It may be the same active ingredient, but it may be a little bit different formulation depending on the product.”

She says following those instructions ensures the best performance of most generic crop protection products.
