Germans eating less pork

Germans are eating less pork.  Consumption in Germany is at an 11 year low.  The nation is cutting back on the brats, chops and wurst in favor of more vegetables.  A story from Bloomberg News says Germans last year consumed the smallest amount of pork – about 2 million tons – since 2005, and the slide will continue this year.

That doesn’t mean pork is not heavily consumed in Germany.  It accounts for more than half the meat eaten there, but pork is losing market share to poultry and beef.  There is also a growing number of vegetarian options at shops and restaurants.  Researchers say the shift reflects changing German attitudes about diets and sustainable food production.

There’s also a greater number of refugees who don’t eat pork. Total pork consumption in Germany is down 10 percent since 2011.  But there’s good news for pork producers.  Demand for pork has increased in Poland, France and Austria.
