Global Dairy Trade index jumps 3.7% Tuesday

Most dairy prices on the world market went up, as the Global Dairy Trade index rose 3.7% Tuesday.  It’s the second GDT trading event in a row with a rising index.

The biggest gain was in the lactose market, with prices up 17.7%.  There were also sizable gains for whole and skim milk powder, Cheddar cheese, butter, and anhydrous milk fat.  Prices fell for Mozzarella cheese and butter milk powder.

Tuesday’s auction had 102 winning bidders in 19 rounds.  Overall, 23,854 metric tons of dairy products were sold during this trading event.

Here’s the breakdown on prices for February 4th:

Lactose was up 17.7% to $1,050 per metric ton, or $0.47 per pound.

Skim milk powder was up 4.7% to $2,835 per metric ton, or $1.28 per pound.

Whole milk powder was up 4.1% to $4,169 per metric ton, or $1.89 per pound.

Cheddar cheese rose 3.7% to $5,025 per metric ton, or $2.27 per pound.

Butter prices were up 3.4% to $7,222 per metric ton, or $3.27 per pound.

Anhydrous milk fat was up 2.4% to $6,766 per metric ton, or $3.06 per pound.

Mozzarella cheese was down 0.1% to $4,157 per metric ton, or $1.88 per pound.

Butter milk powder fell 0.4% to $3,092 per metric ton, or $1.40 per pound.
