Global market dynamics drive change

An Arkansas farmer says global market dynamics drove some changes in his cropping mix this year.

Derek Haigwood says the adjustments weren’t huge, but…

“We are looking at those things not just to capitalize on it but to protect us from certain things. You know, certain input costs going, certain commodities going higher or lower. We want to protect ourselves.”

He tells Brownfield the war in Ukraine was the probably the biggest influence.

“We haven’t planted wheat since 2012. We planted wheat this year at the thought that maybe that wheat prices would make a really strong run.”

Haigwood says China is always a factor…

“Soybean purchases from China. What are they buying from Brazil and how much? And what they are doing.”

Haigwood raises corn, soybeans, rice, cotton, and wheat in northeast Arkansas.
