Good potential for soybeans, average corn expected in SW MO and SE KS

A technical agronomist with Channel Seed says he’s expecting average corn and better soybeans in southwest Missouri and southeastern Kansas.

Brook Mitchell tells Brownfield the timely rains are good for the soybeans.

“The soybeans could end up being tremendously good and we haven’t had a lot of high heat for extended periods of time to where I think we should be able to put on quite a few pods and if the rains keep coming, we should be able to fill pods up really well.”

But he says the timing of the rains has affected corn kernel rows.

“We had a lot of moisture around the five to six leaf collar stages and some products that would normally be around 16 to 18 around, might be a little more like 14 to 16 around.”

Mitchell says pollination has been good for most of the corn and there hasn’t been much tip back. But he’s watching corn stalks for late-season corn diseases, like red crown rot.

“If that ear is still trying to fill itself completely and we lost some nitrogen out of the ground, it will try to hit that stalk to finish up.”

He says corn harvest is expected to start in the next two weeks in Kansas and Missouri.
