Grassley anticipates Congressional help for farmers in tariff crosshairs

President Trump is telling U.S. farmers to get ready to start making a lot of agricultural products to be sold inside the United States as tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China go into effect.

In the meantime, U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley tells Brownfield lawmakers will likely request some sort of assistance for affected farmers, including pork producers who finish imported iso-wean pigs from Canada.

“I think a big tariff on those pigs would be catastrophic for pork, and I’ll bet you we’ll be asked for exemptions on that.”

The Iowa Republican says Trump made it clear while campaigning that tariffs would be a trade tool.

“And I think we have to realize that he’s just doing what the voters voted him to do, and we’ll just have to see how it works out.”

Canadian potash imports could be another product that members of Congress seek tariff exemptions on.
