Grassley continues push for Prop 12 solution

U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley says the next farm bill needs to include a provision that would push back against California’s Proposition 12 law.

“The House Agriculture Committee has it in the House five-year farm bill,” he said. “The Senate, it seems to me it’s going to be difficult for us to get it through committee.”

Speaking to Brownfield at the 2024 Iowa State Fair, the Iowa Republican said there hasn’t been any movement from Senate Ag Committee leadership. “We will just have to try. That’s the best we can do.”

Grassley says Proposition 12 allows California to regulate interstate trade and agricultural practices.

The law, which went into full effect in January, bans the sale of pork, veal, and eggs in California from animals anywhere in the country whose confinement does not meet minimum space requirements.
