Grassley, Roy pen Senate and House leadership farm bill priorities

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley and Texas Representative Chip Roy are urging Senate and House leadership to include several reforms in the next farm bill.

On a call with reporters Thursday, Grassley said priorities include returning the nutrition title to pre-pandemic levels.

“Based on the proposition that when the government shut down the economy, and to get it up and running again, there were reasons to increase a lot of help from the government.”

The Republicans also requested farm payments only go to actively engaged farmers, and that USDA’s use of the Commodity Credit Corporation be reined in.

“And that’s not just a hit on the Biden administration, although they have used it contrary to Congressional intent. But don’t forget Trump did the same thing, and Congress needs to control the spending.”

The lawmakers say by making conservative reforms to key programs the government can tame inflation while also keeping in place a responsible safety net for families and farmers.
