The Great American Milk Drive
Milk is one of the most requested items at Feeding America Food Banks, however nearly half of the nation’s food banks get fewer than 24 gallons of milk donated per week. Jean Ragalie-Carr, president of the National Dairy Council says that isn’t enough and the Great American Milk Drive aims to change that. “The Great American Milk Drive is about donating a gallon of milk to those in need,” she says. “There are over 37 million Americans that go to Feeding America Food Banks across the country and 1 in 6 people are food insecure.”
Ragalie-Carr tells Brownfield milk is one of the most nutrient-rich foods. “Milk, cheese and yogurt all provide critical nutrients,” she says. “That includes high quality protein. Some of the nutrients Americans are missing most are found in milk – like calcium, vitamin D, and potassium.”
She says there are 12 million families that are going without milk because they can’t afford it and it isn’t offered at their local food bank.
The Great American Milk Drive has made donating a gallon of milk is easy. Donations can be made through a text message or by visiting their website. Local food banks will receive the donations based on the donor’s zip code and then distribute milk coupons.
The Great American Milk Drive runs through April 1, 2015. However, through May 25, 2014 the dairy industry will match all donations gallon-for-gallon.
