Great Lakes weather shift: frost risk returns along with break from wet conditions

Michigan’s state climatologist says temperatures on Friday and Saturday could cause some cold injury to crops.

Jeff Andresen says a low-pressure system moving down from Canada is bringing noticeably cooler conditions.

“This is not as cold and dry an air mass as what we saw a week and a half ago on the last freeze event, but still the threat will be there, and it certainly will be down, we will see some frost likely,” he says.

He says while April was the wettest on record for many areas, farmers should get a break from precipitation in the coming days.

“The storm track and most of the precipitation and moisture are suppressed to our south,” he says. “Now the 8 to 14 day, it looks very similar to this. It’s certainly below cooler than normal, but it actually calls for below normal or drier than normal conditions.”

Andresen says overnight temperatures should stay above 30 degrees from mid-Michigan and south.
