Greensburg, Indiana based business owner uses local soybeans for international food products
A southern Indiana production facility is creating additional revenue and demand for food-grade soybeans.
Mayasari Effendi says it started by asking local farmers about U.S. soybean production.
“More and more people were asking about healthy food, so that is why my tempeh started growing,” she says.
She tells Brownfield she partnered with the Indiana Soybean Alliance to open a Tempeh processing facility.
“We got a grant to develop beans that are suitable for the market, which are non-GMO with 42% protein,” she says.
Effendi says her business has continued to grow and hopes to continue to share how important soybeans are to the ag industry.
“It is created by working with local farmers,” she says. “Every bag we sell, $0.05 will be go back to Indonesia for children’s education.”
Indonesia is Asia’s largest soybean producer, but the country lacks storage capacity allowing for more market opportunities with U.S. producers in the future.
