Greer: U.S. and China relationship is stable

The U.S. Trade Representative says the U.S. is working to strengthen bilateral trade with China.

Ambassador Jamieson Greer says the relationship is holding steady.

“We have to protect our national security, and we have to protect our economic security,” he says. “We’ve settled into a stable situation with the Chinese, where the United States continues to maintain substantial tariffs on Chinese goods, primarily on a lot of the advanced goods and manufacturing.”

During a recent discussion hosted by Hudson, he said the two countries are looking to develop a board of trade to ensure both countries are treated fairly.

“We’re looking at that kind of mechanism where we can work with the Chinese to figure out what the non sensitive goods are that we should be trading with each other to get a handle on that,” he says. “At the same time, we have to maintain our national security. We have to protect our economic security.”

President Trump is set to meet with President Xi in May to further discuss the details surrounding the U.S. and China trade agreement.
