House Ag Committee Chairman Glenn “GT” Thompson says the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement has been working for American farmers and ranchers.

“Obviously I want to see USMCA kept intact. I think that’s the best approach.”

Speaking to farm broadcasters at the NAFB’s 2026 Washington Watch, he said this summer’s review of the deal could provide an opportunity to fix a few issues.

“I’m sort of partial to dairy, and so the whole supply management that Canada has used is an issue that needs to be worked out,” Thompson said. “But overall, I think USMCA was a really good achievement under the first Trump administration.”

Thompson says he fully supports the reauthorization procedures.

“One of the worst things we’ve ever done in the past – and that includes my predecessors – is that they accomplish these trade agreements and then they walk away from them and think they are just on an automatic operation. That’s just not true.”

The chairman says he’s been in close communication with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer throughout the process.
