H5N1 detected in Iowa commercial turkey flock

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1 HPAI) has been detected in an Iowa commercial turkey flock.  The flock, located in Palo Alto County, Iowa, will be depopulated.  This is the state’s fifth case within poultry this year.

H5N1 can also impact dairy cattle, and 13 cases were confirmed in Iowa dairy herds earlier this year.  While the virus is often fatal to bird populations, limited or no mortality from the disease is reported in dairy herds.

The Iowa Department of Ag and Land Stewardship continues to encourage strong biosecurity practices and protocols to protect both flocks and herds.

There is no food-safety risk associated with H5N1, and eggs and poultry products remain safe to eat.
