Harvest begins for west central Indiana farmer

A west central Indiana farmer says early harvest results are promising.

Jason Brier, who farms in Warren County on the Indiana/Illinois border, says he began harvesting his March planted corn last week.

“Doing my 101 day that I’ve had for the past few years, just about 300 acres worth.”  He says, “I’m very pleased with the yield, very pleased.”

He tells Brownfield this week’s heatwave is speeding up plant maturity.

“The moisture drops a little bit per day here, so I would say within a week I’m gonna be going pretty strong.”  He says, “It’s gonna get down to the low-20’s, so I’ll be able to sling right through that.”

Brier says he’s been surprised by the overall health of the crop.

“It could be one of them years where they’re both good, which usually one is superior.”  He says, “I think both crops are gonna do exceptionally well.”

Brier says he’ll likely begin harvesting some of his March planted soybeans within the next week.
