Harvest begins in South Dakota

The USDA says harvest has begun in South Dakota.

The latest weekly crop progress and condition report shows one percent of corn, soybeans, and sorghum have been harvested as of Sunday, on pace with the five-year average.

Sixty five percent of corn was rated good to excellent, with 24% mature, 5% behind average. 

Soybeans are rated 61% good to excellent with 32% dropping leaves, well behind the 47% average. 

Sorghum condition rated 60% good to excellent with 27% mature, near the 31% average. Sorghum coloring was 94%, ahead of the 86% average.

Winter wheat planted was 25%, near 29% last year and the 21% average.

Sunflower condition rated 55% good to excellent. Bracts turning yellow was 31%, behind 44% last year. Bracts turned brown was 9%, near 6% last year.
