Harvest slowly starting in southern Wisconsin

A few farmers in southern Wisconsin have begun harvesting.

Doug Rebout says he’s getting ready to combine some soybeans at his Janesville, Wisconsin farm. “We’ve got a couple of fields where the leaves have basically all dropped off of it. It was an early-day variety and we’re looking at possible the end of this week. (to harvest)”

Rebout says overall, the crops look good. “With the wet year that we’ve had, I think we’re going to have good yields but you’ve got those areas that were wet that are going to bring your averages down in certain areas.”

Rebout says a nearby farmer is also looking at combining some soybeans in the next couple of days, and a drive to nearby Monroe showed some corn on sandy soils that looked ready to combine today.  Rebout doesn’t expect to start harvesting his grain corn for another three weeks.

USDA confirms there have been several farmers chopping corn silage in the southern part of the state.
