Heavy rains taking toll on Minnesota farm fields

Heavy rains caused ponding and flooding in southern Minnesota last week.

USDA’s latest crop update says surplus soil moisture continues to hinder fieldwork as farmers try to wrap up planting and apply herbicides.

Corn emergence is 97 percent, with 65 percent of the crop in good to excellent condition.

Soybeans are 97 percent planted, 89 percent emerged, and 66 percent are called good to excellent.

Sugarbeet condition ratings improved again on the week, up to 82 percent good to excellent.

And the first cutting of alfalfa is 79 percent complete, and the second cutting is at six percent.
