Hemp offers opportunities for Ohio farmers

Ohio has passed a bill to legalize hemp and Ty Higgins with Ohio Farm Bureau says the move puts Ohio on a level playing field with other states growing hemp.

“How well will hemp grow in the Buckeye state – we have no idea,” he says. “There’s a lot of testing that is going to start right away to let farmers know, but I think if anything it gives farmers another option.”

Higgins says hemp likely won’t replace corn or soybeans, but it will give farmers another crop option.

“We always talk about diversifying our farms and getting as many options as we can in order to stream some money into the system for our bottom line and I think that hemp could do that for many farmers in Ohio,” he says. “I don’t know how many farmers will grow it and I don’t know how big this crop will be, but I do know there is a lot of excitement out there for farmers all over the state that want to give it a shot.”

The Ohio Department of Agriculture will administer the program, which sets up a licensing structure for farmers interested in growing and processing hemp.
