High fertilizer prices likely to drive phosphate cutbacks this fall

An agronomist with CHS expects farmers to alter fall fertility plans.

Corey Klaphake covers southern Minnesota and says cutbacks are likely because of high fertilizer prices.

“I think definitely there will be some cutting back no doubt, on the phosphates probably in particular is what the big conversation has been.”

He tells Brownfield potash and potassium prices have been more stable.

“So maybe more of an emphasis put on that, and you know being more efficient with your phosphates (and) doing what we can there. Maybe using some type of nutrient enhancement type product with it to help get more of what you’re applying for that next season.”

Klaphake says farmers should focus on efficiency with their fertilizer strategy.
