Hillsdale County sparking ag career interests
Community leaders in southern Michigan are encouraging students to consider a career in agriculture.
Scott Welden tells Brownfield 11 schools came to his farm in Hillsdale County this week to learn about the diversity of job opportunities.
“It wasn’t that long ago that there weren’t jobs, and students were perhaps being told they needed to go to a larger populated area to find opportunity or to find a job,” he says. “We are blessed in rural Michigan to be able to have an abundance of job opportunities and good jobs.”
He says it’s exciting to see high school students be engaged and passionate about their futures.
“The job market is just on fire,” he says. “Any student willing to apply themselves, engage and be responsible today has an opportunity.”
Welden says it was the fourth year for the Hillsdale County Farm Bureau event and record attendance was double that of last year.
Michigan State University Career Services Network says students in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources earned an average of nearly $55,000 after graduation for their starting salaries over the past five years.
