Hinson outlines ag trade deficit concerns

U.S. Congresswoman Ashley Hinson says she’s concerned about the widening ag trade deficit.

“When you talk about $32 billion as a deficit, that’s the wrong way,” she said. “We should be in the plus, the positive, on the other side of that.”

The Iowa Republican tells Brownfield the U.S. needs to be more competitive globally. “What we have seen out of this administration is they have slow walked their trade policies and foreign policy in general.”

Hinson says more needs to be done to improve trading relationships with allies. “We have had some challenges in dealing with our number one and number two trading partners in Canada and Mexico. We’re facing some challenges in dealing with China.”

She says an increase in funding for market access programs in the farm bill could help reverse the trend.
