Hoeven backs supplemental aid package for farmers and ranchers

U.S. Senator John Hoeven says producers are going to need continued support as the ag economy remains under pressure.
The North Dakota Republican says that includes enhancing the USDA’s Farmer Bridge Assistance Program.
“If we continue on this track, we’re looking at a supplemental,” he said. “It would probably be not only help for ag, but also broader weather assistance. Think California wildfires and Maui, which I think will really bring Democrat votes.”
Hoeven, who serves as chairman of the Senate Ag Appropriations Committee, says lawmakers are considering $17 billion in additional relief for farmers, which includes $3 billion for specialty crop growers.
“All these things we do, we need to think about how we make farming and ranching more profitable. And, not just to keep our guys in the game now, but to get this next generation into farming.”
He says the initial plan was to include the assistance in reconciliation, however, it’s now likely to be prioritized as a supplemental spending package as part of natural disaster assistance.
Hoeven made his comments during the NAFB’s 2026 Washington Watch.
