Hog market is most uncertain since late 90’s
An agricultural economist says African Swine Fever continues to take the hog market on a wild ride.
Purdue University’s Michael Langemeier said it has been 20 years since the market has looked like this.
“The 1998-1999 period was a complete train wreck,” Langemeier said. “I don’t think we’ve seen the uncertainty in the industry since that time period.”
But, Langemeier said he does not think that will lead to a decline in pork prices, he tells Brownfield multiple issues have led to the volatility in the market.
“In addition to the price uncertainty related to corn, the swine industry is dealing with trade issues with China, and also, that disease issue,” Langemeier said.
Langemeier said because there are not accurate numbers available that detail China’s losses from ASF, it’s difficult to predict the future of hog prices.
