Hoosier egg producer expands to Texas

MPS Egg Farms, based in North Manchester, Indiana, has purchased Feather Crest Farms, Texas-based egg producer.

Dan Krouse, vice president of operations with MPS Eggs farms, says the operation now has 11 million hens and more than 600 employees, making it the eighth largest producer in the country.

“The Barrett family that had operated that farm for a long time was interested in getting out of the business and they approached us and asked us if were interested,” he says. “We reviewed the options and it really made sense for us. We already serve customers in Texas all the way from Indiana, so this allows us to be a little bit closer to them.”

He says they are very excited about acquisition.

“The team there is phenomenal, and they have two great farms and there is plenty of room for expansion,” he says. “It’s a state I worked in for a little while before I came back to the egg business and I love being in Texas and can’t wait to get back there in person. It’s a very exciting time for our company.”

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the deal was finalized remotely. Krouse says it was frustrating not to be able to meet in person, but the new management team made the process go smoothly.

He says they plan to continue to expand in the future.

“We know that if we want to continue to be a great egg producer we need to grow in size,” he says. “We love being in Indiana and I hope we can grow here. We’ll definitely look at growing in other states too.”

MPS Egg Farms is a family business that has been in operation for more than 50 years. Krouse says his family roots go back to 1875 in North Manchester.
