Hoosier farmers discuss challenges with Senator Young

Hoosier farmers met with Senator Todd Young to discuss the challenging growing season, trade, conservation, and other issues.

“I heard from farmers about conservation practices and areas where we might improve some of the conservation programs at the federal level,” he says. “…We heard a lot about healthcare expenditures. As I went around the room, I heard a number of different stories about needing more competition and transparency.”

The roundtable was with Indiana Farm Bureau members at Roemke Farms in Allen County. Members discussed challenges and restrictions with mowing acres enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP).

Mark Roemke says cover crops and other conservation practices are top of mind for him, especially after the challenging growing season.

“I think we have to change our way of thinking and we have to be open minded,” he says. “We try to get cover crops on all our ground every year and we’re very impressed and see a change already.”

Trade and the ratification of the US Mexico Canada Agreement was also top of mind. Young says farmers need certainty that the USMCA would provide. He says the timing is up to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
