HPAI continues to spread in Indiana

Highly pathogenic avian influenza continues to spread throughout Indiana.

A fourth case of highly pathogenic avian influenza has been detected in an Allen County (northeastern), Indiana commercial egg production operation.

Indiana’s State Board of Animal Health says more than 26,000 birds will be depopulated.

This is the fourth outbreak of HPAI in a commercial operation in the state this year.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza was the cause of death of several waterfowl in Gibson County in December 2024. DNR says it is part of 98 positive detections in waterfowl since 2022.

Avian influenza does not present a food safety risk.

BOAH also reminds dairy producers to be vigilant in their surveillance. According to rules established by the USDA, lactating dairy cattle must have a negative test before interstate movement.  The department has also expanded surveillance through testing milk at the farm or processor level to establish the health status of herds, as well as states.
