HPAI reported in northern Michigan

Highly pathogenic avian influenza has been confirmed in a backyard flock in the northeast region of Michigan’s lower peninsula.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development confirms a flock in Montmorency County tested positive for the virus, the first case in the county since the virus was first reported in the state in 2022.

State veterinarian Dr. Nora Wineland says HPAI is not stopped by colder temperatures, and it will continue to remain a threat as long as wild birds are continuing to carry the virus.

The 100-bird flock was depopulated, and the premises is under quarantine to prevent further spread of the disease.
