The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed a human case of New World screwworm in the United States in a person traveling abroad into Maryland.

In an email to Brownfield, a Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson says CDC and the Maryland Department of Health confirmed the case on August 4 when the person returned to the U.S. from El Salvador.

National Cattlemen’s Beef Association CEO Colin Woodall says the case was quickly identified and handled by the CDC. He says NCBA does not see any elevated risk to the livestock industry at this time.

R-CALF USA CEO Bill Bullard says timely and transparent reporting of NWS cases ensure the proper allocation of resources to protect the U.S. cattle industry against the pest.

The U.S. government has not confirmed the pest in the livestock industry.
