Hybrid selection key for 2025
An agronomist with LG Seeds says success in 2025 starts with corn hybrid selection.
Samantha Agnotti, who’s based in Wisconsin, says farmers should begin with an honest evaluation of 2024.
“Now is the time.” She says, “Harvest season is fresh in your mind. It’s the time to start looking into next year. We know what problems we had. We know what we didn’t like in the combine.”
She tells Brownfield many growers are focused on disease tolerance for things like tar spot.
“We do have a rating scale for tar spot.” She says, “So we rate the majority of our hybrids after two years of testing, and that kind of just comes back to how well that plant can handle and manage that disease.”
However, Agnotti says hybrid selection is just one piece to next season’s puzzle.
“Did we see any nutrient deficiencies?” She says, “What were the big ones? What could potentially be the limiting factor, and where do we potentially need to adjust our fertilizer recommendations? And then, the same with our herbicide plans.”
She says farmers need to work closely with their trusted seed advisor and agronomist to find the right hybrids for their operation.
