IL pork farmer optimistic in 2025
A central Illinois pork producer is optimistic about the industry’s direction in 2025.
Phil Borgic, who raises hogs and grain in Montgomery County, says the pork profitability outlook has improved.
“2025 is looking a lot better than the last 24 months.” He says, “The future looks very bright. For the first time in my history, though we’re not looking to expand the industry. So, we have a balance in between the supply and demand, and it looks like we’re going to have some good profits moving forward.”
He tells Brownfield lower input prices have helped the bottom line.
“The big change is the price for feed has came down quite a bit.” He says, “The price of hogs never was terrible, and so the feed is back in a normal range, with pork demand being as good as it is, exports being tremendous, it has really enhanced our margins.”
Borgic says ensuring animal health through proper biosecurity measures is a key to capitalizing on the positive industry swings.
“Health continues to be the driving force of good year, or bad year.” He says, “You’re never finished with bio security. It’s a journey. It’s never a destination.”
Borgic, and his wife, Karen, were recently named the 2025 Illinois Pork “Family of the Year.” Brownfield spoke with Borgic at the 2025 Illinois Pork Expo.
