Illinois beef farmer benefits from EQIP program
An Illinois beef farmer has made improvements on his farm thanks to the USDA’s Environmental Quality Incentives Program.
Dennis Beyers raises Angus cattle, corn and soybeans in Pana, Illinois. He tells Brownfield he has converted 160 acres of tillable land to pasture allowing them to increase their herd.
“The EQIP Program has made a lot of that possible through the incentive programs that they offer like pasture management, rotational grazing and stream crossings.”
He says in the process they have learned a lot about rotational and intensive grazing.
“I guess my thing to learn the most is do not overgraze the rotational grazing. Let it rest, give it time, feed hay if you have to.”
Beyers says cover crops also work well in his grazing plan.
Brownfield interviewed Beyers at the the Dudley Smith Research Farm winter meeting in Taylorville, Illinois.
