Illinois corn and soybean planting behind average

The USDA says corn and soybean planting is behind average in Illinois.

As of Sunday, 9% of Illinois’ corn crop was planted compared to 28% last year and 43% for the five-year average.

Soybeans started going in the ground last week with farmers getting 3% of the crop planted compared to 6% last year and the five-year average.

Winter wheat is 3% headed and the crop is rated 44% good to excellent.

Statewide average precipitation was over an inch, with some portions getting up to four inches last week.
