Illinois crops struggling as end of planting nears

The USDA’s good to excellent crop ratings in Illinois are only 37% for corn and 38% for soybeans.

Rob Shaffer farms in El Paso, Illinois where both crops are behind.

“We didn’t start planting until June 1st which is the latest I have ever put in a corn crop, for the first time, in my career and I have been farming since 1987.”

As of Sunday, 95% of the Illinois corn crop has emerged and 4% is silking.

Shaffer tells Brownfield he finished his first round of soybeans June 10th and his replanted beans on July 3rd.

“Which is the latest I have ever planted beans in central Illinois. Believe it or not though, they look pretty good – the ones that didn’t need to be replanted.”

Eighty-six percent of soybeans have emerged and 2% are blooming compared to 61% last year. Seven percent of the crop is left to plant.

Winter wheat harvest has reached 74%.
