Illinois Farm Bureau pushing deer management

The president of the Illinois Farm Bureau says better management of the state’s deer herd is at the forefront of member’s minds.

Brian Duncan says farmers are losing money to wildlife.

“This very real economic impact, especially in southern Illinois.”  He says, “Forty acres with timber on four sides, you know, they don’t stand a chance.”

He tells Brownfield delegates adopted policy calling for extended hunting seasons and a better inventory of the state’s herd.

“There’s a real ongoing challenge here with wildlife, and with DNR getting accurate information on what the real population is.”  He says, “Our organization has been asking for improved demographic studies of deer.”

IFB vice president Evan Hultine says it’s an even bigger issue in a down economy.

“That damage on that acreage becomes way more important at $4.00 and sub $4.00 corn than it does at six and seven dollar corn,” he says.

Duncan says the organization is working with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources on the issue.
