Illinois Harvest Emergency Season permits explained
Farmers must obtain a separate permit for each overweight truck moving ag commodities at higher weights under Governor Rauner’s 2018 Harvest Season emergency.
Kirby Wagner is assistant director of transportation with Illinois Farm Bureau. He tells Brownfield Ag News, “They apply for a permit on state routes for IDOT, that excludes interstates. And then they’ll have to check with their local jurisdiction in order to see if they’re issuing the permit or not.”
Unlike last year’s declaration, the special permits issued by IDOT are valid for only two weeks at a time.
The permits allow travel only on state routes, so separate permits must be sought on local roads, as allowed. Up to 10% over the maximum weight is allowed under the emergency permits.
