Illinois harvest rolls on

The USDA says harvest is progressing in Illinois.

Christian County farmer Jeff Scott says his early results are ahead of his record year of 2022.

“Probably 10 to 12 bushel better per acre on the corn than 2022 and beans are probably three to four bushel better,” he says.

The latest weekly crop progress and condition report shows 32% of the corn crop is harvested, up 11% over last week, and 2% ahead of the five-year average.  Forty two percent of the soybean crop is harvested, 18% ahead of last week, and 14% ahead of normal.  Scott tells Brownfield…

“I guess we got the rains when we needed them and we’re able to cut beans again this year with some moisture in them.”  He says, “We’re not cutting in the nines and tens. That helps a bunch.  Corn all had fungicide.  Beans all had fungicide.”

The corn crop is rated 77% percent good to excellent with 94 percent mature, which is 12 percent ahead of average. Soybeans are rated 69 percent good to excellent, with 90 percent dropping leaves, 7 percent ahead of normal.

Pasture conditions are rated 32% poor to very poor, and winter wheat planting reached 18% compared to 21% on average, with 6% emerged.

Thirty eight percent of Illinois topsoil moistures were rated short or very short as of Sunday.
