Illinois Soybean Association focused on profitability and production
The chairman of the Illinois Soybean Association (ISA) says the organization is focused on farmer profitability as it recognizes its 60th year.
Ron Kindred, who farms in Logan County, says soybean growers are facing many challenges on top of declining commodity prices.
“The dicamba issue is another one that’s at the front of our concern list.” He says, “We’ve tried to work to protect all the tools in our toolbox. Dicamba is an important product for a lot of farmers.”
He says the lack of a farm bill and other issues are the latest in a long line over the organization’s history.
“Illinois was doing pretty good with their own state check off, but when you get the national and everybody paying into it, then you can do a lot more on the international stage, in the trade market development stage, and promotion stage, research.” He says, “There’s just a lot that has been done with those dollars that has benefited soybean farmers.”
Kindred tells Brownfield ISA is exploring ways to boost soybean farmers productivity.
“You know, we’ve just got a lot of information now, and we’ve learned how to manage soybeans.” He says, “I think that’s why we’ve seen yields when I first started 45 years ago being 40 bushel an acre to where we’re disappointed if we don’t get 70 bushel an acre now.”
Kindred says the organization continues to fund numerous research projects to improve soybean management recommendations.
The Illinois Soybean Association plans to celebrate its 60th anniversary at an event this November.
