Illinois Soybean Association focused on research

The director of agronomy with the Illinois Soybean Association says farmers have clear priorities for checkoff funded research.

Abigail Peterson says ISA has well over a million dollars currently invested in a variety of soybean-centric research projects requested by member growers and then prioritized by the organization’s farmer board.

“Soybean cyst nematode.  We get a lot of requests on weeds, weed resistance, weed chemical issues.”  She says, “It doesn’t matter where you are in the state, north,  south, east, or west, that weed pressure is usually a hard challenge to tackle. You know, recently a lot of management within conservation.”

She tells Brownfield such research allows U.S. farmers to maintain their competitive advantage.

“And that budget goes up and down.”  She says, “And so like I said, that farmer board really considers where the priorities are. If we lose investments in some important agronomics out in the field, the technologies, the crop protection that we need, we can’t fall behind.”

Peterson says the organization plans to maintain research funding levels in 2025, as well as expand its on-farm trial network cooperation with farmers.

Brownfield spoke with Peterson at the Illinois Soybean Association’s Field Advisor Forum at Memorial Stadium in Champaign,
