Illinois Stewardship Alliance organizing policy platform

The deputy director of the Illinois Stewardship Alliance (ISA) says the organization is taking the next step in ag advocacy.

Molly Pickering tells Brownfield ISA’s celebrating its 50th anniversary by crafting the group’s first policy platform.

“That’s going to help us have a big picture idea of all the policies that are surrounding food and agriculture that we want to work on.”  She says, “That’s going to kind of give us a road map for the future.”

She says the goal is to address potential issues throughout the food supply chain.

“To gather farmers, and eaters, and food system leaders, to really ask the questions like, ‘What are your challenges? What are you coming up against? What keeps you from accessing local food?’”  She says, “And then to dig into what are some of those solutions we can start talking to lawmakers about.”

Pickering says several public meetings are being held across the state this summer to gather input.  She expects the platform to be delivered by the end of the year.
